Every Vegan walking the planet has heard the following question (probably more times than we care to count); “Why on earth would you choose to go on a raw food diet with all the great tasting food out there?” We smile and quietly say to ourselves, ‘Here we go again’ as we prepare to answer the question. Here goes. There are many advantages to a plant-based diet, but these are the main ones to consider:
First of all, strictly from a health perspective it seems like a good idea, doesn’t it? I mean, why not eat better to feel better? The equation is not all that difficult to grasp. So to do this we have to take a closer look at what we’re feeding ourselves. Is everything that we consume serving us? We know it’s not and yet, continue to eat it anyway because it tastes good, right? Yes. Or maybe it’s just become a habit to run late and pull into the drive-thru. Why would we do that, year after year? Because there is an emotional component to eating; it’s comforting. And also food is just straight up addicting. Pick your poison, right? That’s why we say we ‘crave’ something – and go after it! Admit this and you’ll start thinking about making a change; a change for the better. Don’t you want to be healthy?
Next, by not eating any fat, Vegans slim down easily and achieve our natural weight. It’s really great when this happens because we look great and feel even better. Our bodies respond to this diet like no other. Our hearts don’t have to work as hard to carry around all the extra weight. We get tons of energy. We sleep better and our overall mood is calm. Our minds are clear and we become more aware. We lose interest in that box in the corner and start paying attention to each other and the world around us. We tread lightly on the planet and that feels good with all the precious resources slipping away. We Vegans are not part of that problem. We are part of the solution.
Then we realize that meal planning just got a whole lot easier and straightforward. It’s easy to answer the nagging question, ‘What’s for dinner?’ as the veggies present themselves. And this living food just tastes better. Our taste buds change and we can actually taste when there are additives. It’s liberating to have fewer choices! It’s doing more with less and it works!
Lastly, and most important, we don’t need to harm any animals to eat well and thrive. How horrifying is it to kill these sentient beings when there are options?! Watch “Earthlings” if you’re not sure what is involved.
Hopefully these points will motivate you to at least TRY a plant-based diet for the next 30 days and then judge how you look and feel. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. It matters what YOU want for yourself. Make the decision today. Blaze your own trail. Do what’s right for you and the planet. It’s the least we can do for each other and the world.
