Need Inspiration to Simplify? Think Like a Turtle

As a minimalist, everything around me needs to be functional in some way or it just starts to bug me. So, throughout the year, I periodically take stock of how much stuff I own. It’s a lot; probably more than I need because most of it goes untouched or unused and starts accumulating. Before too long, I’m feeling choked by it all. Why is that one thing so important? Turns out, it’s not. Not by a long shot. And then self-reflection takes over and the decision is made; think like a turtle! Swim through life with all that I need right here, on my back. Simple living defined; take only what you can carry.

Sea-Turtle-Philippe-Guillaume

As I tour my home and assess all of my belongings, I begin to feel heavy. It’s true what they say about belongings; your stuff has energy! So deciding to purge the unnecessary becomes easy. I move effortlessly from room to room, organizing and categorizing fast. Clothes are tossed that no longer suit or flatter me. Then I move onto the books. Many, no matter how good or enjoyable, I simply will not read again. Out they go. Catchalls or decorative items get the heave-ho if I have not referred to them or lifted them to dust (which is another level of purging altogether). The exercise goes on and the donation boxes fill up fast. Rest assured, these treasures will end up with someone who cherishes them for their own reasons. For me, I’ve enjoyed them while I’ve had them and as I change, so will my need to not keep so much stuff.

I’m not sure what or when this “purge trigger” gets tripped. All I know if that once the excess is trimmed, I feel better. There is a noticeable shift of energy as if the room(s) needed some breathing space of their own. Then my energy and clarity expand. It’s a wonderful way to live– with less! What is it about stuff that gives us the illusion of safety or security? It’s a crazy way to feel good. Purging is the only way to free yourself from the burden of stuff. After all, how much stuff do you really need? Not much. Not by a long shot.

Sure, I live in the real world and still have some extra stuff, but overall I return to the turtle and ask, ‘How much do I really need to keep?’ or ‘If there was a fire, and I had only a few panicked moments to grab the really important stuff but I had to carry it out, how would I do that?’ This exercise keeps me wary of bringing stuff home whenever I see an alleged “deal”. We’re a society of consumers excited about consuming yet at the end of the day, if you are honest with yourself, it all just becomes stuff after the buzz of the buy wears off unless there is a specific use for it and/or you reach for it often. It helps to be really strict with yourself when buying something. Think: less is more!

This process takes some time and only after the excess is trimmed, can the true energy take over. Gone are the distractions and the heaviness. I can breathe again and enjoy only that which truly inspires and uplifts me. What on earth possessed me to fill up my space in the first place? The turtle remains my hero. (Talk about a minimalist!)

The Coolest Tote Bag Ever – Gotta get one!

When I think about everyone standing in unison, as Vegans, as one same like-minded group, there comes to mind a declaration, of sorts, that epitomizes what we all stand for and are open to sharing. I call it “The Vegan Creed” and it goes like this:

THE VEGAN CREED

We respect our bodies and choose to eat a plant-based diet.

We like being clean and alkaline at a cellular level and disease free.

We prefer looking and feeling younger and having tons of energy.

We hold sacred that animals are not commodities.

We appreciate the environment and the air we breathe.

We think and reason clearly and want what’s best for humanity.

We believe nature reveals a profound simplicity and truth that must be protected.

We embrace peace and a peaceful existence with each other and all living things.

We respect people who take maximum care of themselves by eating living food.

We support freedom in any form or expression.

We desire ultimate health and longevity.

We enjoy exercise and maintaining physical strength.

We choose raw food because it allows us to achieve all of this – and more!

And we want all of this for everyone—even you!

And so, having put the actual words to paper, I figured it would be prudent to share it with others vis-à-vis, what else, a canvas tote bag. That way, you can carry the vegan declaration close to your being and hopefully, others will notice and inquire about the plant-based lifestyle.

Pass on the Gadgets and Gizmos for Weight Loss – Go Vegan Instead

If one thing is certain in the world today, it’s that weight loss takes time and discipline. Nothing comes easy or fast as some advertisements would have you believe.

TummyShaper SmTake the latest gadget or gizmo named the “Lipo” Tummy Shaper. Evidently this item, when worn, ‘helps make you slimmer each time you wear it!’ Really? I find this claim to be a bit, shall we say, of fluff.  If it were really that easy, every gym in the world would go out of business.

Truth be told, having a trim, fit, lean body takes work to get and maintenance to keep. And no amount of clothing is going to speed up the process. However, there are some steps that can give you a better sense of yourself and put you on the right path to the best weight loss tip ever: Do it naturally; calories in (diet) vs. calories out (exercise).

Let’s start by taking an honest look at your diet.  It’s safe to assume that most people are eating out of habit and not being very mindful of what they put in their mouths.  Food is addicting just like any other substance. And we crave what we eat.  Besides, who has time to make a meal anymore? Isn’t it easier to go through the drive-thru or order take-out? And don’t forget the adult beverage.  Happy Hours are super easy, right? But, how is any of that behavior going to help you lose weight? So it’s time to change your thinking and get serious.  And stop buying all that junk food already. A vegan diet is your best bet to eliminate all the toxins and lose weight naturally. It’s easy to do once you do it. You’ll feel better and have more strength and clarity than ever.

The second part of this is your exercise program.  Do you put in the effort to get moving and burn some calories whenever the chance?  Did you forget what it’s like to play in the grass?  What sport really gets your blood pumping? Yeah, that one.  Go after it and participate however you can. Get in the game instead of watching from the sidelines or from your living room couch.

Do what you can to pull both of these into alignment – and fast! Because every day you sit instead of stand, drive instead of walk, walk instead of bike, or bike instead of run, your body is keeping on all that weight you so eagerly want off.  And why not try to only eat HALF of that meal or split it with another and pass on dessert?  Start by doing small things until you can do more.  At least taking a step in the right direction is a beginning. Before you know it, you’ll have great momentum and look better. And then, your clothes are a little bit looser and people start saying how great you look. Voila~ weight loss success! Yeah, it’s that easy. You get the idea. Motion begets motion so get moving.

So don’t be fooled by these wonder products that promise weight loss miracles. Isn’t that cheating? I mean, you still have to take the thing off at the end of the day, right? If you want a flat tummy, do body-weight exercises like sit-ups and crunches.

Be real. Get real. Make changes. Be healthy and get on with life.  No one wants to be overweight and miserable and facing a life of disease, health issues and hospitals. Do you?

GET MOVING! GO RAW!

Eating Out Vegan Style? Stay Local

Ok, so you’re still wondering if being a Vegan means giving up on the enjoyment of eating out. I’m here to tell you that partaking in a meal that someone else makes, is what makes dining out fun! So, keep your eyes peeled for those places you pass everyday but for some reason, are hesitant to patron. Like me, you may be unaware of management changes and return to find the menu that reads like it is made for you; VEGAN CHOICES. Yeah! I’ve arrived.

And so it is with my local eatery, The Midtown Cafe, which has changed hands many times and yet again, most recently unbeknownst to me. Lucky for me, I know the Chef personally and Nick really has his Vegan hat on fulltime. He’s created some really great stuff thanks to the new manager who continues to give him the freedom he needs to make these amazing creations.

Panini2Sm

My latest visit included the Lunch Special: Vegetarian Panini (sans cheese) and a tossed salad as a side. The verdict? Yum! Yum! A side of Wheatgrass juice is added for good measure and is almost too pretty to drink. An urn of help-yourself chilled water tops it off. The atmosphere is  light, bright and hip. It’s a far cry from it’s predecessor and thankfully, the staff and Nick were spared.

Juice2Happy eating! Remember to support your local eateries if you can. They appreciate it.

Living Life without Additives – You can too!

The greatest benefit to a raw food diet is the ease by which one can go about the day. ImageLike nature, meals are easy, leaving plenty of mental real estate to address other and more pressing issues. No longer does one have to toil, plan and prepare the meal. Gone are the hours spent shopping for a list of ingredients only to return home and have to deal with them some more. (Unless you’re a Chef, I suppose.)

By consuming only fresh and hopefully organic fruits and vegetables (whenever these are available), can one truly understand and appreciate the bounty of food. We were designed to consume tasty food. And we deserve it!

K.I.S.S. principle works well here. Definately by ‘keeping it simple’ can we truly benefit. And it’s the simplicity of it that appeals to me the most; rinse and go! I love it! Only minutes to satisfaction and super fast and easy clean up as well. There’s no replacement for fresh, organic fruit and veggies. None.
